Esplanade, July 2008The day I took this, I was training. My plan at the start of the day was to ride out through Cambridge and Somerville to the Minuteman Bikeway, take that out and back, and then finish with the Esplande Loop. When I left Boston, it was warm and sunny, a blue-sky day. The further out I got, the cloudier it got, until as I neared Lexington Center, the sky in front of me had gone completely black. There is a roof behind an old depot right in Lexington over the bike path, and it's the last real civilization on the trail, so i decided to stop and wait. Soon, I could hear thunder, and within five minutes, it was absolutely pouring. I was waiting under that roof for about 4o minutes for the storm to blow through, then I decided to head home before I could get hit with another one.
The path was pretty rough at this point, covered with water, mud and debris. The water was over a foot deep in some places. By the time I got back to regular streets, I was soaking wet and filthy. I decided to stop for a few minutes in Davis Square to have a Powerbar and some Gatorade. When I got there, my back tire was feeling a little low, so I figured I'd find a bike shop or a gas station and get some air before finishing my trip home. When I got up to go, the tire was totally flat. I didn't have a spare tube, and as it turned out, there were no bike shops open in the area at this point.
So I had to walk home. 7 miles. Pushing my bike.
Good stuff.
This photo was taken on the Esplanade when I was almost home, from the footbridge at the salt and pepper bridge, where I have taken many a picture before, including this one. After all my drama, it was a beautiful evening to be by the river.
